Sunset Photography Tips
Sunset photography is not only the moment the sun touches the horizon. The best sequence often starts in golden hour and ends in blue hour.
Shoot the full transition
Start during golden hour for warm directional light. Keep shooting after sunset as blue hour adds cooler color and artificial lights become visible.
The strongest image may happen after the obvious sunset moment, especially in cities or coastal scenes.
Control contrast
Expose carefully around the sun and bright clouds. If needed, use exposure bracketing or silhouette the foreground intentionally.
A simple composition with a clear horizon, foreground shape, or reflection often works better than a crowded frame.
Frequently asked questions
Should I leave right after sunset?
No. Stay for blue hour because the sky and artificial lights can become more balanced.
What lens is best for sunsets?
Wide lenses work for landscapes; telephoto lenses work well when you want a larger sun or compressed layers.
