Photography Light Planner

A good photography light plan starts with the sun but also considers subject, location, weather, and the story you want the image to tell.

Build a simple light schedule

Start with blue hour, sunrise, golden hour, midday alternatives, evening golden hour, sunset, and evening blue hour.

Pick two or three must-have shots for each window so you are not improvising during the fastest-changing light.

Use weather as a filter

Clear skies favor silhouettes, warm highlights, and predictable color. Clouds can create drama, but they can also hide the best light.

If the forecast is uncertain, choose compositions that work with both direct light and soft overcast conditions.
